Greetings and a warm welcome to the website of the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS)!

South Asia is increasingly important in the evolving global geopolitical and geoeconomic order. The region is home to some of the fastest-growing economies, a young population and expanding digital infrastructure. Furthermore, the significance of the region has been accentuated by geopolitical reconfigurations and escalating contestations for influence in the Indian Ocean. On the economic front, the fact that the region is connected to major sea lanes and maritime trading routes is alerting various South Asian states to the growing potential of the blue economy. Significantly, a number of South Asian states are also seeking to cultivate greater economic, infrastructural and energy connectivity. More broadly, connectivity with Southeast Asia has emerged as a major priority across much of South Asia.

Despite these positive trajectories, the South Asian countries continue to grapple with a multifaceted array of challenges. These range from internal ideological contestations to the urgent need to mitigate the impact of climate change. The socio-economic, geographical, cultural and political diversity of the region adds to the complexity of these challenges.

Established in 2004, ISAS has evolved to become an important component of the global network of research institutions focused on South Asia. It is committed to fostering a comprehensive understanding of the region and disseminating knowledge and insights to diverse stakeholders, including academia, policymakers, the business community and civil society, both within Singapore and internationally. Beyond its core group of dedicated researchers, ISAS has developed into a dynamic hub where scholars and policymakers from around the world converge to exchange research findings and ideas. This has enabled ISAS to reinforce its position as a prominent institution in the study and communication of South Asian affairs. In this, ISAS benefits from, and contributes to, the rich intellectual resources at the National University of Singapore.

As the dynamics of South Asia and the global landscape continue to evolve, ISAS remains steadfast in its commitment to expanding, reassessing and refining its areas of research. This is integral to ensuring the Institute’s relevance and cutting-edge thrust. Among its diverse areas of research, ISAS is actively engaged in studying the evolving multipolar, multilateral and minilateral landscapes as well as analysing the dynamics of global governance and cooperation. The impact of geopolitical contestations on the South Asian states remains a central interest. The Institute also critically explores the trade and economic policies of the South Asian countries. At the same time, ISAS tracks digitisation within economies and technological revolutions, aiming to understand their profound impacts on societies and economies. ISAS also conducts in-depth and comprehensive research into the domestic political landscape in the South Asian states. This is particularly important given that 2024 is a year of elections across much of South Asia. Furthermore, ISAS addresses pressing issues related to sustainability and climate change. At ISAS, South Asia is not studied in isolation from the other regions of the world. South Asia’s engagement with Southeast Asia and the areas of potential cooperation are of particular interest.

With this in mind, ISAS has formulated five core research themes, namely, International Relations, Multipolarity and Multilateralism; Politics, Society and Governance; Trade and Economics; Strategic Technologies; and Sustainability and the Environment.

In line with its ongoing commitment to provide insightful and in-depth analyses of the latest developments in South Asia to a diverse audience, ISAS has introduced several new research outputs. These include the South Asia Scan, South Asia Discussion Papers and Special Reports, all of which complement its regular publication of briefs, insights and working papers. Furthermore, ISAS produces an in-house newsletter that delves into pertinent South Asian topics.

In response to the evolving digital landscape, ISAS has expanded its presence on various digital and social media platforms. Our podcast series – South Asia Chat – serves as a medium for top scholars and policymakers to share their perspectives on contemporary developments and topical issues.

In 2024, ISAS proudly celebrates its 20th year of establishment. To mark this milestone, we have planned a series of interesting initiatives and events throughout the year. We invite you to join us in the commemorative activities that will highlight two decades of the Institute’s dedicated research, collaboration and impactful contributions to the understanding of South Asia and its global significance. Your engagement and support are integral to making this anniversary a memorable and enriching experience for the ISAS community and beyond.

    Warm regards
